J. Anthony Graves
A product of the unforgiving East Side of Chicago, J. Anthony Graves has experienced his share of perilous living in the Midwestern miasma he calls home. Despite the fact that he started reading at the age of two and went on to become a straight-A student, he eventually dropped out of high school and became immersed in the lifestyle that surrounded him. His formative years exposed him to a merciless and tumultuous side of life, a life that mandated strong survival instincts and incredible ingenuity.
Now, having righted his path over the years, Graves is a family man who spins his observations about Chicago street life into vivid portrayals of the urban landscape and the lives that unfold on its foreground. Drawing from his own impressions, Graves brings depth to his characters, begging the reader to consider the underworld lifestyle as more than just a struggle of good versus evil; one finds himself feeling compassion and understanding for the hard-edged gangsters while enthralled in the often violent and horrific plot lines.
“I see life where there is none,” Graves says of his writing. “Whereas some people may think there are no original stories to tell about the hood, I have an entirely different point of view. One of my main reasons for writing books is to show the world the profundity of all walks of life.”
In addition, Graves hopes to help those who have yet to fall in love with reading find stories that speak to them so that they are inspired to increase their own literacy. As he phrases it, he is “raising the literacy rate one book at a time.” Hence, the reader finds Graves’s characters speaking Ebonics coupled with fifteen-dollar words in an effort to present relatable yet literarily stimulating material, giving Graves a fresh voice in the urban fiction genre.
Graves’s second novel, Dead End II: Pierre’s Story, will be out in May 2012. For more information about J. Anthony, go to www.janthonygraves.com.
