CHAPTER 2
WHEN DESTINY FINDS YOU
The noon day sun beat upon Tom’s face. He sweated profusely. His lips were dry but he ignored his condition and concentrated only on playing. Bang! Bang! Bang! That was the sound which Tom made as he beat his stick against the rusty old biscuit tin. Suddenly, without any warning, a strong gush of wind blew an old, dirty bag from out of nowhere. It landed on top of Tom’s rusty old tin. He curiously picked up the bag, opened it and saw that it was completely empty. He decided he could use it to store his stick and rusty, old tin.As the sun began to set in the glorious sky Tom began walking home, dragging the bag he had found behind him. Again, as soon as he entered the front door of his home mother handed him his bowl and in it was a little bit of flour porridge. As they all sat on the rotted wooden floor drinking their porridge Hazel asked mother if she had found work. Mother replied ‘‘No. It has no work in the town. I will have to try elsewhere. Tomorrow I will check up Tunapuna side.’’
‘‘Donna’s mother cook stew fish and dumpling today.’’ Carla then said to mother. Mother simply looked at her for a moment and said nothing. Then Tom said ‘‘I wish I had some chicken to eat.’’ Mother became frustrated with their complaining, and, angrily she said to them ‘All you hurry up and eat your food.’
When they were all finished eating mother washed the bowls, sang everyone a song, out the candle and went to sleep. That night Tom slept with the dirty old bag he had found. His mother was too tired to notice the bag otherwise she would not have allowed him to bring it into the house. As Tom and his two sisters lay silently on the rotted, uncomfortable floor they found it very difficult to sleep. As they all stared at the galvanized roof they listened to the sounds of gun shots, dogs barking and cars passing in the road.
“I still hungry.” Hazel whispered to her sister and brother.
“Me too” they simultaneously replied.
“I wish I had some more ah that stew fish and dumpling.” said Carla
“Na, I wish I had some fry chicken.” said Tom
“You only like chicken. I wish I had a big burger.” Carla said to Tom and in return Tom replied “Well I wish I had the biggest, burger in the world with tomatoes and lettuce and cheese…” but before Tom could finish his wish mother had awakened. “Shhh… all you shut up and sleep.” She bitterly said. That night Tom had the most wonderful dream. He was in a colourful land where everything was made of the favourite foods that he loved to eat and foods that he wished he could eat. There were mountains of ice-cream, rivers of milk, a house which looked like a giant bake chicken, sugar cake sea-saws and chocolate slides.
CHAPTER 3
‘A NEW DAY’Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! This was the noise mother made in the kitchen as she hurried to prepare some porridge. As Tom watched her pour the last remaining flour into the boiling water he felt sad. He closed his eyes in an attempt to return to sleep but as he pulled his bag towards him he noticed that it felt different. It felt heavier. It looked bigger and more bulgy. He felt very confused. Tom slowly peeped inside the bag and at first glance his eyes could not believe what they saw. Tom rubbed the Yampi from his eyes then took a second look inside the bag. It was the most marvellous sight his eyes had ever seen. ‘‘Oh my God!’’ he shouted out aloud. ‘‘Mummy, Mummy’’ he yelled as if a snake had bitten him.
Franticly mother turned her head and looked at him. She saw a familiar object in his hand. She carefully took it from his hand, “Is a
